Solutions in Health Areas - Contilia

The Elisabeth-Krankenhaus Essen of the Contilia Group was equipped with a modern, area-wide Wireless LAN for various applications by blue networks. As data safety ranked first, the parameters of BSI [1] were considered.

Aim

The aim of Contilia was to stake mobile medical devices like e.g. ECG appliances via WLAN access reliably to the network. Besides, during their stay patients and guests should receive a legally verified internet access for mobile devices like smartphones or notebooks. Both issues should be reproduced through a solution with own infrastructure, while the IT department always should be able to check and operate the utilization. In addition the internal data transmission should be protected at the best.

Solution

As a central WLAN solution a controller based system of Huawei was selected. The controller AP6605 regulates and administrates at the same time all access points (AP). In the whole building 215 access points were in total installed, whose positions were reliably defined through a professional WLAN site survey, to avoid later problems. The components were brought together via modern dedicated Huawei S5700 Gigabit-Switches with PoE [2]. As some access points were only accessible complicatedly via LAN cable, they were staked via a so-called mesh link in a 5 GHz band with neighboring access points via radio and needed only one single connection for power supply. The solution broadcasts several radio networks, while users of internal networks are authenticated via 802.1X with certificates and subsequently have to build up a VPN tunnel. Patients register at a web gateway with personal login details, which are valid for predefined run-times. Here users have deliberately restrictions in bandwidth and number of allowed devices, so that the system features a good scalability. Beside central administration Huawei eSight offers security functions like recognizing of foreign WLAN devices.

Benefit

The WLAN access to the internet is a further service offer of the hospital for patients and visitors.
The mobile use of medical-technical infrastructure has increased and IT security has still improved.
